THE CHRONICLES OF A MADMAN
I spent over 20 years writing this short story collection, and I pride myself on how diverse it is. Thus, I won't even try to write a summary blurby thingy here. That's what my publisher's for. You can enjoy samples and reviews, though.
ISBN -- Um, it'll be published later this year. Update coming! |

VIGILANTE JUSTICE EPPIE 2002 Finalist
Drugs are being stolen from the Police evidence locker and sold on the street. These same drugs are killing the users. When Internal Affairs detective Gary Drake's brother becomes one of the victims, Drake is even more determined to find the person responsible. Will his search for justice destroy the love he has finally found or will he administer his own brand of vigilante justice?

RISING FROM THE ASHES EPPIE 2004 Finalist
Mom raised two sons alone despite rape, abuse, alcoholism, and the death of the man she loved. I'm the one everyone thought would grow up dysfunctional. My brother's the one who killed himself.
That's an accurate summary, but it makes the book sound all gloomy, doesn't it? I actually think it's fun. This is my finest work, and it was also one of the biggest sellers in the history of Novel Books Inc.
But since NBI is gone, this book is homeless right now.

AN AMERICAN REDNECK IN HONG KONG
A humorous sequel to a serious biography? Hey, why not? Dog stories, cat stories, horse stories, Hong Kong stories, and of course those "infamous" hog farm stories that got me in so much trouble. Picasso's childhood, too. (The cat, not the painter.)
This is another former NBI title, currently "between publishers."
Outrageous. Hilarious, great voice, fine structure. Well-written, well done and I hooeyed out loud a couple times good! Thanks for the read! Jeff Rose, author

WHO MOVED MY RICE? EPPIE 2005 Finalist
Watch me, fresh off the boat, stumble and bumble my way around Hangzhou for two years before I finally start getting the hang of living in China. Does China make foreigners nutty or does it attract nutty foreigners? The world may never know.
"Read these humorous essays little by little or straight through. Follow Michael from his days of 'naive tourist' to university teacher in China.
"It's great fun to read how this American Redneck got along in China, cracking jokes all the way. Along the way you'll learn more of a country we hear so much and know so little about."

After four years away from writing, I dove into this during NaNoWriMo 2007. Three weeks, 63,000 words, and I'm back.
This book opens where WHO MOVED MY RICE? leaves off, with the three of us leaving Hangzhou to teach in Shaoxing. It moves all over the place, half in China and half in Thailand. And it has cats. Lots of cats. |

2008 promises to be a banner year for me as an author. I've put the finishing touches on WHO MOVED MY UNDERWEAR? and contacted one of my publishers. I've laid my hands on THE LAZARUS EFFECT, which I wrote in 2001 as a sequel to VIGILANTE JUSTICE. I've edited it and contacted another one of my publishers. Gary Drake returns. Oh, and keep reading... |

I wrote this sci-fi novel in the early 80s, then re-imagined it in the mid-80s as a STAR TREK novel, then gave up on it. Someone held onto the printout for over 20 years. I remember much I loved in this book, and much which is positively horrendous. I'm re-imagining it yet again, this time as a sequel to VIGILANTE JUSTICE and THE LAZARUS EFFECT, while I wait to get my printout in the mail, and it should be filled with some howlers for my free monthly newsletter. |
I've been writing fiction since 1978, and I've been editing since 1990. I made the transition from editing tech manuals and sales literature to editing novels in 2000. In July 2006 I started doing both. I also lecture on Medical Writing at Chiang Mai University.
I was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA in 1963 and I grew up in Roxboro NC. Thirteen years later, I moved to Tampa, Florida. Thirteen years later, I moved back to NC. Ten years later, which puts us at 12/99, I moved to Hong Kong, married a lovely Australian lady, and adopted a lovely Calico cat from the SPCA. Two years later, all three of us moved to mainland China, where I reinvented myself as an Advanced English Writing teacher. In July 2006, we moved to Thailand, where I edit and occasionally lecture at Chiang Mai University's medical college.
I launched my story-writing career when my first story, "The Bargain," won second prize at the National Honor Society's 1981 Florida State Convention and led to my inclusion in the 1982 WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN WRITING.
Following a long hiatus from writing, I ran off to Hong Kong in 2000 and resumed my career with a vengeance. The complete list of short story publication credits is too boring to include here. 25 of them, all featured in my anthology, THE CHRONICLES OF A MADMAN.
I also wrote three new books in 2000, and all four books were published in 2001. Then I returned to the working world, which is why I write much slower now. I wrote a fifth book in 2003, which was published in 2004, and I needed another four years to produce its sequel. Then I returned to fiction and am attempting to publish THREE books in 2008, and one isn't even written yet. Stay tuned!
I was also the voice of Vanilli. See my Grammy?
